When we moved into our home, one of the features I liked least was the plantation bi-fold doors on every closet. They look nice, but fall off the track easily and never fail to painfully catch a finger in the fold when opened. My daughter’s nursery closet has remained doorless for the last year while I researched different options. The space is tight in the small nursery, so we would need either a sliding or pocket door. Our solution: a Masonite Barn Door.
Barn doors offer a stylish and practical interior door solution. They save space and give additional flexibility by defining new areas of the home while hiding others. For the nursery, we wanted the closet door to be functional and aesthetically pleasing — just like a barn door! For a few moments we did consider a pocket door — but they are not as easy to install or maintain. Barn doors have a track on the outside of the wall, which is easier to access!
How to Use the Masonite Barn Door Kit
The Masonite barn door kit is an easy DIY project that can transform any part of your home in just 90 minutes. While I love trying new DIY home projects, I enlisted my brother in law to tackle the barn door installation.
The Masonite Barn Door Kit comes with a durable solid core barn door, all required Barn Door hardware for installation, and easy to follow instructions. Pictures of tools needed for installation are on the outside of the box so you can gather everything you need before you begin.
My brother-in-law walked me through the process, giving me tips and tricks to share that will make this DIY project easier. For example, he suggests to gather your tools and lay out all of the materials in an orderly fashion before you begin. Then, read through all of the instructions before picking up any tools! He always uses a pencil to mark where he is going to drill or if making measurements.
We only had a few issues with our barn door installation. The first small issue we encountered during our barn door installation was unrelated to the barn door kit. The trim on the closet door has warped over time, so it is crooked! My brother in law used a level to ensure the track would be straight on the wall so the door could hang parallel to the floor.
The second issue was tool related! The kit suggests the use of a standard wrench for tightening bolts on the track. This is typical — however since the track was close to our ceiling, he could only turn the wrench one way. My brother-in-law says the process would have been easier if he had an impact socket attachment for his drill.
It was smooth sailing after everything was leveled appropriately and bolts were secured tightly. The barn door is lightweight enough that my brother in law could lift it onto the track by himself. If I were installing the door alone I would have needed assistance though! Once the door was installed on the overhead track, he added the floor track too!
The Nursery Closet Barn Door Reveal
The final step to our nursery closet makeover was completed after my brother-in-law went home. I painted the door to match the trim in the nursery! The door and trim are Benjamin Moore Simply White. We opted to leave off the barn door handle for aesthetics, but it is easy to install if we change our minds!
