Tips for an Awesome Fall Maternity Session

If you’re planning a fall maternity shoot before winter arrives, it’s important to communicate with your photographer before the big day. I’m fortunate to work with incredible local photographers who always have a vision — but sometimes the photographer will look to the subject for ideas! Here’s how to be prepared.

Pick out a fall maternity outfit a few weeks before the shoot.

One of the biggest mistakes a pregnant woman can make is to wait until last minute to pick out an outfit for a special occasion. Planning a maternity shoot outfit can be stressful, so give yourself enough time to try on different things until you’re comfortable.

Consider the weather and location when planning a bump friendly outfit. Midi and Maxi dresses are flattering while pregnant — patterned or solid colors both work well with an outdoor background. Choose comfortable but stylish shoes — like booties or flats. Also, have a backup dress prepared in case of emergencies.

One of my favorite places to shop for maternity dresses is Pink Blush. Check out their latest styles here.

Choose a fun, but easy location.

There are so many different outdoor locations for a fall maternity session. An apple orchard, pumpkin patch, local park, farm stand, farm field or even your own backyard! If you want to take photos at a public location — like an apple orchard — check with the owners make sure it’s okay to take photos on their property.

Bring Props (aside from your baby bump)

There is nothing worse than feeling like you don’t know what to do with your hands during a photo shoot. When you’re pregnant you have a built in prop: a baby bump! But if you’re like me, you don’t necessarily want to be holding your belly in every photos. A fall hat, sunglasses, purse, pumpkin, leaf or apple are all easy props to use during a fall maternity session. You can grab on to your dress too (haha). If you are including your partner or children in the photo shoot, grab ahold of them!
